FAQs

What type of clay do you use?

I currently use a black stoneware that comes from California. It is a dream to throw with, stains everything in the studio including my hands from the high iron content, is extremely challenging to fire, but worth all the fuss.

Do you make all of your glazes by hand?

Yes. I mix all of my glazes by hand by weighing out grams of various chemicals (raw materials mined from the earth). I apply glazes several ways by brushing, dipping, pouring, spritzing, and spraying.

Are your pieces food safe?

Yes. All of my functional ware that are made for holding food and drink are covered in a food safe glaze. I choose tried and true glaze recipes that are specifically known to be food safe. We do not use any glazes (functional or sculptural) that contain cadmium or lead in our studio.

Is your work dishwasher safe?

Yes. However, your handmade pieces will have a longer life if you hand wash them, which I highly recommend.

Do you take preorders or custom orders?

The short answer: No.

The long answer:  I do not take any holds or preorders. All items are on a first come, first served basis in the shop update. I want to remain true to my boundaries (I also work 2 additional jobs) and artistic identity, and only create work on my own timeline that reflects me as an artist. That being said, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Send me an email with what you’re looking for and I’ll let you know if it’s something I’m interested in doing and have time for, but please do not take it personally if I say no. Email me at: info@adbceramics.com

Are your shipping materials sustainable?

Yes. I have worked hard to ensure that all of the shipping supplies I use are either recyclable, compostable/biodegradable, and/or sustainable. It is hard for a small business without a lot of cash flow to spend the extra money into sustainability, but I feel that it is worth it and necessary. The boxes and paper wrapping I use can be recycled, reused, or composted. The packing tape I use is made from plant-based cellulose and is biodegradable and can also be composted. The packing peanuts are made from corn and can be reused, composted, or simply rinsed down your sink. Sometimes you might get a package with random packing materials as I am trying to reuse what is also sent to me from other companies.
